The show
Welcome
to Tango Theatre, possibly a new
genre: a mix of music, song, dance and story-telling where the stage
area spills into the audience and the performers present a story of
Buenos Aires with traditional tango songs and dance.
The feeling of
intimacy and participation is enhanced by a pre-show dance workshop and
social dancing after the performance when everybody is invited to join
the performers.
Malena:
Mid thirties, waitress, former prostitute, upper class girl disgrace
and rejected by her Catholic family and friend after getting pregnat at
the age of 16. She carries her past like a burden and still hopes that
Rodrigo, her lover will come back some day. (Performed by Patrissia Cuberos)
Don Mario:
Mid forties but he feels much older than his years. He has a limp and
uses a stick after a failed suicide attempt after his girlfriend died
tragically following his initial rejection.
(Performed by Steve Morrall)
Rodrigo: Young poet, dancer and dreamer; Malena's lover who abandoned her in search of a better future for both of them.
(Performed by Steve Morrall)
Don Alonso:
Malena's father. Despotic and self-righteous. His misunderstood love
for Malena leads him to throw her down the stairs and out of his house
when he realises she is not only not a virgin any more but she is also
pregnant.
(Performed by Steve Morrall)
